What to do with the children on the Costa Brava

Proposals and activities for enjoying family holidays on the Costa Brava

The Costa Brava and the Baix Empordà region are family destinations with many proposals and activities that can be enjoyed by the family, so that the youngest members can discover our territory. Appreciating nature, reliving history, learning about our gastronomy and understanding the past and present of our region are some of the experiences you will find here and that can be enjoyed all year round.

If you would like to make the most of a family holiday and you don't know what to do with children on the Costa Brava, here are some proposals for you:

Local Path: The Water Path

This is a lowest level route (green) that runs through different towns of the Vall d’Aro. It enables the youngest members of the family to start doing mountain bike rides. The path is very easy to follow and is signposted all along. This path will take you from Begur to the beautiful beach at Sa Riera, following the former course of a stream. Along the way, you will come across different hydraulic features such as the old irrigation systems.

Mediaeval Towns and the Empordà Landscape

From the historic centre of Pals, you can take a short route to discover the history and observe the beautiful Empordà landscape, going through Torrent and Sant Feliu de Boada and taking you back to Pals. Following the cycle touring network, before returning to Pals, you can continue to Palau-sator, Fontclara or Peratallada.

Greenway "The Small Train"

You can start this route in Palafrugell or at the entrance to Palamós, next to the filling station, where the former "King’s Highway" starts. The old route the train took is now a stretch of the greenway that you can take from Santa Cristina d'Aro going through Castell d'Aro, Platja d'Aro and Sant Feliu de Guíxols. An easy, safe route for walking or cycling. Further information at www.viasverdes.com

El Ter Route by bike

From Verges to Torroella de Montgrí, the route follows the course of the Ter River. Along the way, you will find items linked to the river and you will be surprised by the apple tree orchards before you get to Torroella de Montgrí.

Megalithic Route through Les Gavarres

In the middle of Les Gavarres Mountain Range there is a magical place, ideal to visit with the family. Presided over by Santa Coloma de Fitor Church, we recommend visiting the surrounding areas and going as far as the Llobinar Dolmen. There is also a large resting area.

The Cork Museum in Palafrugell

Cork has been a very important resource for the region. A journey through its history will enable you to get to know the origin and use of this material as well as many curious pieces of information. In the family workshops, you can learn how to make a cork stopper. www.museudelsuro.cat

The Fishing Museum in Palamós

This museum, which is unique in the Mediterranean, offers the best family experience to be able to understand the world of fishing. Together, you can visit a fishing boat, take part in various workshops and the younger members of the family can play a very entertaining game called “Gall i Cap”. The Mediterranean Museum in Torroella de Montgrí

Adults and children alike will discover the natural and cultural links we have with the Mediterranean. Further information at: www.museudelamediterrania.cat

Kayak Rental

In Tamariu, there is an extraordinary astronomic phenomenon called “The awaking of the sun at the Cova d'en Gispert”. The combination of the straight line of the Cova d'en Gispert facing east means that twice a year, the sun rises in perfect alignment with the cave. This enables you to contemplate the beauty of the back of the cave in natural daylight.

Visit to the Torre de Can Mario

This is a large industrial complex which occupies a considerable area in Palafrugell’s urban centre. The factory area consists of numerous buildings of two-story industrial premises that are built forming a network of courtyards and streets. It is an interesting distribution that has been preserved intact. Further information and opening times at: www.palafrugell.cat

The Coastal Path between Calella de Palafrugell and Llafranc

This is one of the most beautiful examples of coastal paths that can be found on the Costa Brava. It is a highly accessible walk along the Costa Brava and takes about 20 minutes at an average pace. It is less than a kilometre long and offers spectacular views of the coast. You can consult the guided route of the bays and coastal paths of Palafrugell at the Tourism Palafrugell website.
